Highway 95 MVA

On Friday, August 27th, 2010, Shafer Franconia Fire & Rescue was dispatched to Highway 95, approximately 2 miles South of Highway 8 for a 2 vehicle accident with unknown injuries. Upon arriving at the scene, 2 vehicles were witnessed in the ditch with numerous bystanders present. Vehicle #1, a Ford Crown Victoria, contained 1 patient who was alert and conscious in the drivers position. Vehicle #1 experienced full airbag deployment and had extensive impact damage to the driver’s side left front fender. Patient was complaining of numerous pains on left side and was C-Collared and back boarded. Patient was then transported to the hospital via Lakes Region EMS.

Vehicle #2, a Subaru Outback, contained 5 occupants who were all located at the rear of a passerby's van upon arrival. Except for very minor seatbelt abrasions, all passengers were OK and did not complain of any injuries. Vehicle #2 experienced full airbag deployment as well. The Subaru was carrying a large rooftop container and pulling a 3 person jet ski on a trailer. Due to the impact of the crash, the rooftop carrier broke loose from the roof rack and ended up in front of the car after it came to rest in the ditch. The jet ski broke the winch post off the trailer and made a significant impact at the rear of the vehicle. It also shattered the rear window and produced a large amount of damage to the rear gate.

Shafer Fire & Rescue stayed on scene for a few hours directing traffic while the vehicles and trailer were removed from the ditch and family members from the Subaru were able to remove personal property before being taken away on flatbed tow trucks.

Spruce Avenue Structure Fire

On Friday, November 27th, 2009 at 18:40, Shafer Franconia Fire & Rescue along with Center City Fire, Osceola Fire, Taylors Falls Fire, and Lindstrom Fire were dispatched to the 26000 block of Shady Avenue in Franconia Township on the report of a structure fire. Shafer's first arriving units arrived on scene and the attached garage was completely burned and the main home was engulfed on both floors of the D side where the garage was connected to the main dwelling. A member of the homeowners family had moved 2 vehicles that were parked in front of the garage limiting damage and allowing more room for the Fire Departments to work to contain the fire. (see pictures) Heavy damage was sustained to the home with the attached garage a total loss. The homeowner was using a lawn tractor just prior to the fire and parked it inside the attached garage before leaving for the evening. The lawn tractor was thought to be the preliminary cause of the fire.

30000 Shady Ave Structure Fire

On Monday, August 17th, 2009 at 13:56, Shafer Franconia Fire & Rescue along with Center City and Taylors Falls Fire were dispatched to the 30000 block of Shady Ave in Shafer Township on the report of a structure fire. The first arriving engine arrived on scene and had heavy smoke showing out of the rear of the structure. Shafer's Engine setup as the primary engine and two, inch and a half lines were pulled for an attack and backup line. The homeowner was on scene and stated that there was no one else in the home. Shafer sent an attack team in to knock down the fire through the A side of the structure only to find an impossible way to get the charged line in and down the stairs due to the design of the structure entrance along with the basement entrance. (See pictures) The initial attack team then had to make entrance into the basement via a basement window. The attack team was able to make a quick knockdown of the fire while the additional arriving units setup positive ventilation to help clear the structure of heavy smoke. Although the house did suffer some smoke damage and flooding of the entire basement from water pipes that burst. The fire was contained to the rear corner of the structure and appeared to be structurally sound and salvageable along with most of the homeowner’s personal property. Lindstrom Fire was also dispatched to the scene for manpower due to the time of day of the fire and the available personnel that were able to respond.
