Grass fire destroys 60 acres near Lindstrom!

A DNR plane and two National Guard helicopters were sent to put out a Chisago County grass fire Wednesday. Chisago County dispatched Lindstrom Fire to a blaze at Olinda Trail and 260th Street in Franconia Township around 4:15 p.m.

Upon their arrival, the fire had spread quickly due in part to the hot temperatures and high winds. The fire spread northeast burning approximately 60 acres of swamp.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources sent the three aircraft.

Authorities believe the fire started from a hot muffler that made contact with the dry swamp grass when someone was mowing the lawn.No buildings or houses suffered damage and the fire was extinguished in two hours.

The Shafer Fire Department, Center City Fire Department and Chisago City Fire Department also responded.

Wednesday, Governor Tim Pawlenty signed an Emergency Executive Order to provide for air fire suppression assistance to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. The order comes following an increase in fire danger across the state, including in Chisago and Isanti counties. A Red Flag warning is in effect for much of the state due to dry conditions and high winds.
